Most Common FAQs

Kanchenjunga is located on the border between Nepal and India.  Specifically, it sits within the Taplejung district of Nepal's Koshi Province and the Indian state of Sikkim. Three of its five peaks (Main, Central, and South) are directly on the border, while the West and Kangbachen peaks are entirely in Nepal

Kanchenjunga is famous as the third-highest mountain in the world (8,586 m), located on the border of Nepal and Sikkim, India. It's known for its majestic beauty, spiritual significance, and challenging climbs. The peak is sacred in local cultures and lies within rich biodiversity zones like the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.

Kanchenjunga has been designated as a conservation area in March 1998. It covers an area of 2035 sq. km. in Taplejung district, lies in the northeast corner of Nepal.

The Kanchenjunga trek is one of the most challenging treks in Nepal, ideal for experienced trekkers. It reaches altitudes over 5,000 meters, involves long days of hiking (6–8 hours), and passes through remote, undeveloped regions with limited facilities. The full circuit takes 20–25 days, requiring excellent fitness, mental resilience, and proper acclimatisation. A restricted area permit and a registered guide are mandatory. Due to its remoteness and unpredictable weather, this trek demands serious preparation but rewards you with stunning, untouched Himalayan beauty.

The cost of trekking to Kanchenjunga Base Camp depends largely on the group size and trekking style. For a group joining a standard teahouse trek with proper daily supplies, the price typically ranges from $2,000 to $3,500 per person. However, if you're trekking solo or prefer a camping-style trek, the cost can vary significantly based on logistics, equipment, and support staff needed.

The Kanchenjunga North and South Base Camp trek is one of the most fascinating and rewarding adventures in Nepal, offering a rare chance to explore both the North (Pangpema) and South (Oktang) base camps of the world’s third-highest mountain. This trek stands out for its remoteness, natural diversity, and rich cultural encounters. Unlike the more commercial routes, the Kanchenjunga region remains untouched, featuring pristine trails through dense forests, alpine meadows, glaciers, and high mountain passes. Trekkers often spot rare wildlife like red pandas and Himalayan black bears, adding to the thrill. The journey also immerses you in the authentic lifestyles of Limbu, Rai, and Tibetan communities, making it as culturally enriching as it is scenic. For those looking for a well-organised and professionally guided experience, Explore Dolpo Treks & Expeditions (P) Ltd is known for offering some of the best trek arrangements in the region, ensuring safety, comfort, and a deep connection with the environment. This trek is perfect for seasoned trekkers seeking an off-the-beaten-path Himalayan experience.
