Trip Overview
Detailed Itinerary
Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative will receive you and transfer you to the hotel. The remainder of the day is free to rest or explore the vibrant streets of Thamel, or visit the nearby Boudhanath Stupa or Swayambhunath if time permits.
Take a scenic early morning flight to Tumlingtar, offering aerial views of the eastern Himalayas. Upon arrival, drive through lush hillsides and river valleys to reach Heluwa Besi, a small settlement along the Arun River.
A bumpy yet adventurous drive takes you uphill toward Jaubari. The journey reveals a transformation from lowland greenery to terraced hillsides, dotted with Rai and Limbu villages, offering a preview of the cultural diversity along the GHT trail.
Today’s trek begins with a steady descent and ascents through terraced fields and mixed forests. You’ll pass local settlements where traditional lifestyles and agricultural practices are visible. Reach Gudel, a traditional Rai village known for its thatched houses and panoramic views.
Continue westward through forests of rhododendron and pine, passing suspension bridges and ancient stone steps. Bung is a culturally rich Sherpa settlement with monasteries and chortens scattered around.
The trail steepens today as you ascend into denser forests and more isolated terrain. You’ll pass yak pastures and encounter fewer villages as you gain elevation and reach Cholem, a serene grazing area.
The trail climbs through high-altitude forests and opens into alpine meadows. As you reach Khola Kharka, views of surrounding ridgelines and snowy peaks begin to dominate the horizon.
Descend slightly through pine and bamboo forests before joining the main trail coming up from Lukla. Follow the Hinku Valley upstream to reach Kothe, nestled near the Hinku River.
Ascend gradually along the Hinku valley through scrub and moraine landscapes. The glaciated walls of Mera Peak loom ahead. Reach Thaknak, a seasonal yak herding settlement.
Spend the day hiking to nearby ridges (up to 5000m) or visiting Sabai Tsho glacial lake. This day is critical for acclimatisation before crossing higher passes. Overnight in Thaknak.
A short but steep ascent leads you to Khare, the base of Mera Peak. The scenery is increasingly dramatic, with views of Kyashar and surrounding peaks. Rest and prepare for the pass crossing.
Begin early to cross the glaciated Mera La. The views from the pass are breathtaking – Everest, Makalu, Baruntse, and more. Descend on the west side to the remote campsite of Khambu Dingma.
A rugged day of trekking through uninhabited valleys with massive glacial features and the sound of roaring rivers. Reach the isolated Baruche Base Camp under the shadows of towering peaks.
Continue the glacial journey toward Amphu Laptsa—camp near the base, surrounded by dramatic ice formations and mountain amphitheatres.
An early start to climb the technical Amphu Laptsa Pass, using fixed ropes. From the top, marvel at the peaks of Imja Valley before descending steeply to Chukung in the Everest region.
Cross one of the three major passes of the Khumbu: Kongma La. The high point offers views of Nuptse, Lhotse, and the Khumbu Glacier. Descend to Lobuche through glacial moraine.
Trek along the Khumbu Glacier to reach Everest Base Camp. Explore the site where climbers stage their summit attempts. Return to Gorakshep for the night.
Early morning climb to Kalapatthar for a close-up sunrise view of Everest. After breakfast, trek westward to Dzongla, passing below the north face of Cholatse.
A tough day crossing the icy Cho La pass. After the pass, descend into the valley of Ngozumpa Glacier to reach the small settlement of Thangnak.
A short trek brings you to the turquoise Gokyo lakes. If weather permits, hike to Gokyo Ri in the afternoon for epic views of Cho Oyu and the Ngozumpa Glacier.
Spend the day relaxing, exploring additional lakes, or reattempting Gokyo Ri for sunrise views. This also serves as a contingency day.
Another high pass day as you ascend Renjo La. The summit reveals an awe-inspiring panorama of Everest, Makalu, and Gokyo Lakes. Descend to the isolated village of Lumde.
Descend gently through yak pastures to Thame, home to an ancient monastery with spiritual significance and Himalayan murals. Enjoy Sherpa culture at its roots.
Continue on a less-trodden trail into the Rolwaling region. Cross forested terrain and alpine meadows before reaching the grazing area of Thyangbo Kharka.
A challenging ascent to Cave Camp, the base before the Tashi Labsta Pass. The campsite sits beneath jagged peaks with no settlements in sight.
A full day for acclimatisation, safety preparations, and weather check before the pass crossing.
An alpine climb over the heavily crevassed Tashi Labsta Pass. Use fixed ropes and crampons. Descend to the Trakarding Glacier to camp amidst ice and moraine.
Continue along the glacial route and descend into the Rolwaling Valley, reaching the village of Na, where you’ll feel civilisation again.
Descend alongside the Rolwaling River through pristine forests and waterfalls. Reach the peaceful hamlet of Dokhang for an overnight stay.
Complete the descent through terraced fields and lush hills to the roadhead at Chetchet. If time permits, visit the monastery in Simi Gaon on the way down.
Drive back to Kathmandu via Charikot, enjoying final views of hills and valleys. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel and rest.
A well-earned leisure day for souvenir shopping, spa, or visiting heritage sites such as Pashupatinath or Patan Durbar Square.
You will be transferred to the airport for your international departure. End of a life-changing adventure through the Great Himalaya Trail.
