The human civilization in Nepal seems to have from 8th century as per the scholars who tend to find historical aspects of the region. It was between 6th to 8th centuries that the powerful Yarlung Dynasty from Tibet conquered all the Tibetan speaking territories of the region.  Because of the mission of conquering people living the region began to migrate towards the southern part, which now is Dolpo and the Upper Mustang, the kingdom of Los. As Yarlung Dynasty of Tibet began to lose its control and eventually fell aprt in mid-ninth century, Dolpo came under the Purang Kingdom. Both Purang and Dolpo were once again conquered by Guge Kingdom in 10th century but it could not stay under it for long as sKyid lde Nyi ma mgon of Guge divided his kingdom among his three sons.

Dolpo and Serib both lost to courageous of Ya-rtse clan, King A-Sog-lde in mid-thirteenth century who then reigned Gungthang, Mgon Po Ide Kindom. Historians also have found documents that justify Mongolian army reaching Dolpo and neighboring regions and conquered many parts of it. After conquering the Mongolians handed over the territory to the Shakya rulers.

As the time traveled, during 14th century Dolpo soon was controlled by the Kingdom of Lo, which nestles to its east sharing the same Trans-Himalayan belt. Since then the Kingdom of Lo begin to control the trading route that stretches on the Trans-Himalayan route through Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. Dolpo was now the territory of Lo Kingdom as it had to pay tax and provide human labor for the powerful Lo Kingdom. However, for a short span of time between 15th & 16th century Dolpo became independent for a while and was ruled by the Ra Nag dynasty.

Until the rise of Gurkha soilder under King Prithivi Narayan Shah in 1769, Dolpo was under the Lo Kingdom. During the nation unification battle the Lo Kingdom was defeated by Gorkha Kingdom and was since then the part of Nepal including all territories it reigned over including Dolpo. Gorkhas continued to expand but the Chinese intervention stopped them and hence the present territory that Nepal controls could not go further.
