Dolpo got its name from the word “Ba Yul” that refers to “Hidden Land”. Absolutely true to its name Dolpo is a land of hidden treasures boasting pristine and unexplored beauty, rugged charms and extreme wilderness. Exploring the trials through the land of hidden treasures, Dolpo trekkers find themselves amidst the beautifully nestled deep Himalayan valleys, authentic Tibetan culture, and a long chain virgin snow capped peaks, pristine and mystical lakes and rich alpine wildlife. Trek to Dolpo has two segments. The shorter one goes as far as fascinating Phoksundo Lake and the longer trek to Dolpo crosses several high altitude passes to Shey Gompa and further.

Lower Dolpo Trek, which is a moderate trek along the fantastic trails in mid-hills of Dolpo, starts and ends in Juphal. An isolated corner of Trans-Himalayan zone in the northwest region of Nepal, Lower Dolpo trek winds through demanding high passes, time forgotten highland villages, sacred Buddhist Monasteries, picturesque view of yak caravans, the pleasing glimpses of Tibetan plateaus provided with the scenic backdrop of Himalayas. While on this trek, trekkers also come across the peaceful and deep-blue Phoksundo Lake, the deepest lake in the entire region. In the Lower Dolpo region Ringmo, the village just above Phoksundo Lake preserves one of the last oddments of ancient Tibetan culture where still the pre-Buddhist religion, Bon is in practice.

Trekking further the Upper Dolpo Trek includes high mountains. The view of Dhaulagiri massif to the southeast surrounding the spiritual sanctuary comes into view as the trekker trek higher to Upper Dolpo. During this trek, the trekkers at points find themselves in the middle of deep and isolated Himalayan valleys that resemble the Tibetan highlands. Upper Dolpo Trek is relatively challenging as it crosses three high passes of this region namely; Kangmara La (5115m), Numa La (5159m) and Baga La (5190m). The challenge however, rewards trekkers offering them the panorama of Dhaulagiri, Kanjiroba and Annapurna range.

Besides the alpine nature and authenticity of Tibetan ancient culture, Dolpo is also home to popular Shey Phoksundo National Park whereby the trekkers have opportunities to explore the protected area and witness wide assortment of flora and fauna like snow leopards, Himalayan tahr (mountain goat) and blue sheep to name a few. Dolpo, these days has been the gold rush destination for medicinal herbs. Yarsagumba has been the most fetched medicinal herb that is found in the elevated regions of Dolpo.
